Article on enLighten 34 About "Sinner's Prayer"
More recent, a song recorded by the Greesons, which combines prayer with another hallmark of our Christian faith, sin and the confession of one's sins -appears to be changing many lives as it is sung in concert by the Greesons - and we would pray is having the same impact on at least one life when it is heard on enLighten34.
Of course we are speaking of A Sinner's Prayer - the words to which was our last post on this page.
We recently heard from the writer of this song, Rick Simpson, who shared that while the pastor of a small church in Kentucky, the Lord burdened his heart to reach more people with the Gospel. He says, "I began to think of WORDS that would BRING HOPE TO THOSE AT THE BOTTOM OF LIFE AND, IN THE SAME SONG, SHOW THEM A WAY TO GET UP OUT OF THE MIRY CLAY OF SIN."
We hear about a person being inspired to sit and write an entire song in one sitting. Rick says that was not the case, that it took him weeks of prayer and thought to refine the words and message embodied in A Sinner's Prayer. In our last exchange, we asked him what else we could share with you, the enLighten34 listeners and readers of this page. His response:
John 3:16 is a POWERFUL VERSE that shows God's love for the sinner . . .
A. The Past of John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he "gave". Revelations 13:8 states "And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world." This implies God loved us before the world ever began.
B. The Present of John 3:16 - that "whosoever believeth" in Him. John 3:16 became present to me on June 29, 1983 when I got saved. It can be present to the sinner who feels the drawing of the Holy Spirit and SINCERELY prays the Sinner's Prayer. But, then there is . . .
C. The Future of John 3:16 - should not "perish", but have "everlasting life." The curse of sin was upon the human race UNTIL Jesus came out of the tomb ALIVE! Now everyone can be FREE from the curse of sin by believing in JESUS CHRIST, the Son of God. They don't have to go to the place where they will "perish" but they can go to HEAVEN! Jesus can reverse the curse of sin in any sinner's life if he/she will allow the Holy Spirit to speak to their heart and heed to his call and pray the "Sinner's Prayer"
A final thought: We can only rejoice when we hear and read reports of unheard-of numbers of persons coming forward during altar calls following the singing of this song proclaiming the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ! Hallelujah!
